Avoid this and buy the wired version instead

This energizer has one fatal flaw not listed in the product description: You need to locate it near a grounding rod. But wait, not just any old piece of rebar…you need one that is either galvanized steel or copper-clad, and it must be at least 6 feet long in good soil. Oh, and that means you also need a grounding rod clamp. The soil in my region is like clay and can get very dry sometimes so I would require an even LONGER grounding rod.

Waste of money

I bought this last summer to put around my newly planted orchard. It’s far from my house so I needed something that doesn’t need to be plugged in. Solar versions were too expensive for me to experiment with. This is my first experience with electrical fencing. This battery operated charger seemed like a good fit for my 1/4 acre orchard. Unfortunately, it doesn’t work well after a few months.
I installed it in September 2011. It stopped working before xmas. When I installed it first, it seemed to work. I checked with electric fence meter. Charge was the same at the charger as at other points of my fence. I was happy it worked and grounding was ok (I was worried because it was dry at the time and my soil is rock and clay). I had to switch batteries a month later. Now it beeps once and stopped: looses charge somewhere. I have checked for any problems with posts, grass, branches leaning and can’t see anything obstructing/touching the ground along the fence. It just doesn’t work anymore. I paid somewhere around $25-30 for this so there isn’t a big loss, however, I still need to buy something else. That $25 would have been better spent as part of some other electrical fence charger. Now I am searching again, leaning towards solar charger. I am giving it 2 stars: I don’t like it…. If animals would have eaten my young trees, I would probably give it “I hate it” one star rating.

Racoon’s gone

I had a problem with racoons empting my deer feeders( 350 lbs in 1 week per feeder) even with a cage around the feeder motor so I bought 2 of these fence chargers and installed them on my feeders they worked great no more Racoons on my feeders. This charger put out 7000 volts!!!!!!!
